At least half of the workers at Pilgrim Station were locked out and are now back on the job at the Entergy owned power plant due to a contract dispute over health care benefits. Now local officials are looking to the NRC to refuse to renew the plants license until a number of issues are addressed. WCVB has the story.
According to this report from WATD Plymouth's town Selectmen will ask the NRC to put Plymouth on hold over concerns of striking workers and unresolved questions regarding the safety of the plant in the wake of the Fukishima disaster.

Middleboro woman and a man from Kingston were rescued after their boat took on water in the early morning hours
in Kingston Bay. Enterprise News has the story

the boat took on water plunging them both into the 40 degree water.

The Cape Cod Times is reporting that 'A citizens group is mounting another in a series
of challenges to the re-licensing of the 40-year-old Pilgrim Nuclear
Power Station in Plymouth.
In a letter sent
this week to the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management, the
Kingston-based Jones River Watershed Association requested that the
agency rescind its certification that Pilgrim's operations meet state
standards for coastal areas.
"We're trying to make sure that our agencies do
what they're supposed to do," said Pine DuBois, the association's
executive director.'
Even without a license renewal Pilgrim Station is allowed to operate by the NRC according to this article from The Enterprise. Two more appeals have been filed and the license expires on June 8th of this year.
The Cape Cod Times reports that 'The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station is
safe, according to the plant's owner and the regulatory agency that
oversees the United States nuclear industry.
"We
wouldn't allow this plant to continue to operate if we did not think
they were operating safely," Pilgrim's senior resident inspector for the
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Max Schneider said during an open
house held by the agency Thursday night at Plymouth Town Hall.'
According to the Plymouth Town Manager's office, Jeff Berger, the Chairman of the Nuclear Matters Committee for the Town of Plymouth will conduct an open house in the Mayflower Room at Plymouth Town Hall, 11 Lincoln St. in Plymouth, Mass from 5-6:30. The open house will be followed by a forum with nuclear safety expert Arnie Gundersen and nuclear industry supporrter Howard Schaffer from 7-9p.
Members of the public will have an opportunity to learn first-hand from NRC staff members about the plant’s safety performance during 2011 and about the agency’s oversight of the facility. The meeting format will allow citizens to discuss plant-related topics on a one-on-one."

POWER, POLITICS & WILDLIFE SURVEY
The
Gurnet Saquish Survey is designed to educate us all about the opinions
of the the residents, friends and families of Gurnet and Saquish. The survey submissions are anonymous. SURVEY CLOSES AT THE END OF APRIL.
WATD reports that a $2.4 million repair project was approved for the Powder Point Bridge. The bridge
recently received a poor rating by the Mass Department of
Transportation. But according to Powder Point Bridge Committee Chair
Jeff Lewis, the deteriorating foundation will be fixed quickly and with
minimal vehicular disruption, “With quick approval from MassDOT we
expect we could get started this summer and then the cap beam work in
the fall when there’s less use of the beach.”
The NRC moved one step closer to the 20 year license renewal for the aging Pilgrim nuclear power station according to this report from REUTERS. The expiration date for the license would be 2032 when presumably it would be up for renewal again.
The Union of Concerned Scientists found that there were 15 near misses according to their definition of near misses in this report from ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS.
Unlike cities and towns in Europe many states are losing the ability to decide what happens within their own borders. According to Alternet.org, on January 19, federal District Court Judge Garvan Murtha ruled that the
Vermont legislature had exceeded its power when it voted in 2010 not to
let the Vermont Yankee nuclear-power plant operate after its 40-year
operating license expires on March 21 this year. Under federal law, the
judge wrote, only the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has the power to
rule on issues related to radiation safety.
The Atlantic Sturgeon may be placed on the endangered species list possibly forcing a halt of the Entergy Pilgrim Station nuclear power plant's licensing renewal. U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, the ranking Democrat on the House’s
Natural Resources Committee, raised the issue according to this story from the Patriot Ledger.

We reported over year ago about an initiative in Kingston to install wind turbines. The story went largely unnoticed by mainstream media and there was little discussion about the impending wind farm. Well hello 2012. The motion passed and low and behold the 140' towers are going up. The turbines generate significant low cost electric energy with no harmful waste but the the view across the bay is forever altered. The Pilgrim Station nuclear plant has powered back up three days after a leaky valve forced the shutdown. Plant officials confirmed that some radioactive gas was released but assured the public that it was a t low levels and posed no threat. Read the Enterprise News story.

FAULTY VALVE CAUSES ANOTHER PILGRIM SHUTDOWN

The AP is reporting that a leak of radioactive steam from a faulty valve has shut down the Pilgrim nuclear plant. The valve couldn't be closed and the plant has been shut down. According to this article in the MANOMET CURRENT website Plymouth selectmen voted 4-0 to put a non binding question regarding the re-licensing of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station on the ballot.

A judge and the NRC recently rejected the appeals from Mass. Attorney General Martha Coakley and after approving 71 nuke plant license renewals and rejecting none it appears a foregone conclusion that Pilgrim will be re-licensed. An atrocious record of performance over its history is only highlighted by mistakes, miscues and breakdowns over 2011. Pilgrim is one of the oldest designed nuclear plants using a flawed design that even GE, its manufacturer, no longer endorses. The plant with many parts in salt water is 40 years old. It has been shutdown several times this year due to errors, human we're told. Now the man behind the finances is set to spend the next 15 years in prison after making of with 94 million dollars on investment money according to this Patriot Ledger story.
The Wall Street Journal reports in this article that a large cylindrical piece of metal went crashing through the roof of a warehouse in Plymouth. The origin of the metal cylinder is still a mystery.

A cooking demonstration went wrong at Plimouth Plantation this weekend when sparks ignited the thatched roof. The fire was contained to one building and there were no injuries according to this report from WATD.

The spent fuel rods from the Plymouth nuclear power plant never left the plant. In fact the rods remain in what was supposed to be temporary storage water tanks. Designed to hold only 800 rods these pools now hold 3,000 radioactive rods and growing. 10-21-2011 Boston.com reports that the pilot whale circling inside Plymouth's inner harbor has died marking the third such death in ten days. The other whales beached and died on Duxbury Beach near the Gurnet and on a beach in Truro on the Cape.
FIRE ON THE GURNET

A fire in the basement of a Gurnet home was extinguished Monday afternoon at 1:30 after a Gurnet resident called 911.Plymouth Fire Department Deputy Chief Mike Young reports that resident noticed smoke coming from the basement and called in the emergency.Thanks to mutual aid agreement the Marshfield and Duxbury forest fire units responded within 15-20 minutes with Plymouth arriving in 37 minutes.The fire originated in the basement where solar equipment generated heat to ignite nearby combustibles including plywood.Fire spread through the basement and to the first floor before it was contained.Most of the fire damage occurred in the basement.The Plymouth Fire Department ruled the fire accidental in nature. Seacoastonline.com is reporting that NOAA's count for dead seals washing up on northern New England beaches has reached 94. The spike in deaths has been traced to September 1st. Dead seals have washed up between the North Shore through the coast of Maine. Preliminary necropsy results have not been released to the public according to this story.
SECOND WHALE FOUND DEAD IN TRURO

Another pilot whale has washed up this time on a beach in Truro. It's the second pilot whale in less than a week to wash up on a beach in Massachusetts. The cause of death still unknown as scientists await the results of a necropsy performed on the whale which beach itself before dying on Duxbury Beach. The BostonChannel.com has the story.
SeacoastOnline.com reports that 66 dead seals have washed up on beaches from Massachusetts to Maine. The cause of the deaths won't be known until the results of the necropsies come in later this week.
Once endangered the largest living creature on the face of the earth was spotted by a whale watching boat off of Provincetown. Wicked Local Cape Cod has the story.
The PATRIOT LEDGER reports that there were three pilot whales off the beach and two were herded to deeper water by a local boater before the third grounded itself and expired on the beach. A team from the NE Aquarium is on site performing an autopsy on the dead whale according to this story.

GE WARNS REACTORS LIKE PILGRIM COULD FAIL IN EMERGENCY

According to Reuters news service GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy has
warned the operators of boiling water reactors including Entergy which operates Pilgrim Station that the plants could fail to shut automatically during
an earthquake, potentially risking the safety of the power plant. GE Hitachi said said most nuclear plants could
fix the problem by replacing fuel channels. A typical boiling
water reactor has between 400 and 800 such channels.

NRC REJECTS MASS A.G. REQUEST ON PILGRIM 09-12-2012
The NRC, the government agency that oversees regulation of the Pilgrim nuclear power station, rejects the complaint that Mass Attorney General Martha Coakley that licensing be suspended pending a thorough investigation of the spent fuel rods in storage pools and other safety concerns regarding the plants design, the identical one to the Fukishima plant that suffered catastrophic damage during the Japanese tsunami. According to the AP the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says human error caused May's
unplanned shutdown of the Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Massachusetts.
The NRC says Pilgrim's owners failed to adequately train and enforce
standards. Although there was no danger to the public, the incident was
serious enough for an NRC inspection team to be sent to the facility.

Employees of Plimouth Plantation recovered a 200 pound, one piece wooden dugout canoe from Western Point after the canoe floated down the eel river and across Duxbury Bay. The dugout canoe while only three years old is identical in design and construction from the original canoes that plied local waters and very likely were used to reach Saquish in the 17th century.

Team Saquish, a non profit rowing club founded by residents, was participating in the Hull Lifesaving Museum’s 32nd annual Snow Row when a competitor's boat capsized throwing its all male crew into the water. Team Saquish crew members recovered all of the male rowers without incident according to this report from the Patriot Ledger. The team rows in boats built by a longtime resident. CAR FIRE OVER JULY 4TH WEEKEND 07/04/2010
According to eyewitness accounts, just past 7pm on Sunday July 4th an SUV traveling at a higher than safe rate of speed hit the median near unpopulated dunes and burst into flames. Plymouth Police appeared quickly, apparently already on beach. Duxbury Harbormasters responded within 15 minutes. Marshfield responded with a brush fire truck within 22 minutes and Duxbury Fire Department arrived almost 40 minutes after the first call. The vehicle burned itself out before being extinguished without further incident. View images HERE.
