WGBH CAPE COD AFFILIATE REPORTS ON CAPE PREPAREDNESS FOR PILGRIM DISASTER
12-02-2011

A judge and the NRC recently rejected the appeals from Mass. Attorney General Martha Coakley and after approving 71 nuke plant license renewals and rejecting none it appears a foregone conclusion that Pilgrim will be re-licensed.  An atrocious record of performance over its history is only highlighted by mistakes, miscues and breakdowns over 2011.  Pilgrim is one of the oldest designed nuclear plants using a flawed design that even GE, its manufacturer, no longer endorses.  The plant with many parts in salt water is 40 years old.  It has been shutdown several times this year due to errors, human we're told.  We've highlighted, (with this same pink background color), the articles we've linked to from various news sources over the past year.  It's just a sampling of the press the plant has received.  Listen to this report from WGBH affiliate reporter Sean Corcoran and scroll down to view the other unsettling articles.  The Town of Plymouth has apparently already approved the re-licensing and receives revenue in the form of a Payment in Lieu of Taxes, PILOT, program.  Cape towns are handing out iodine tablets in the event that an emergency causes the shutdown of bridges and residents must take the pills to avoid thyroid cancer during a release of radiation.  The more you read the less you like but we encourage you to form your own opinion when you visit PILGRIM WATCH and The NRC.
