C 1937 I spent a week on Saquish at my grand dad's cottage. He was Dr.Noyes from Duxbury and Plymouth. The cottage later belonged to
Bill Bennett. (my step grand mother made Grandpa sell it) It was so cool listening to the bell bouy, playing in the tidal pools.saving baby sand dollars and star fish, pumping water from the community pump, waiking to the old fort site which was full of beach plum bushes and poison ivy.
Wonserful memories of a wonderful place.

My heart has always been at the Gurnet. My grandfather, Archibald Oram, owned the little schoolhouse which now belongs to the Moores. From the time I was a baby, I spent every summer there. I see the message from Lisa (Allen), and remember her parents, Louise and Charlie, who bought my Uncle Stanley's cottage next to the schoolhouse. He took me and my brother Bill out in his boat and we chased a seal around the harbor. Also have my fond memories of Bill Jacobs. We'd put a flag out whenever we wanted lobsters. My brother Bill and his wife Barb recently sold their cottage on Saquish, but still own a couple lots there. My daughter (who moved to Duxbury with her husband) rent a cottage every September so I still get my Gurnet fix. Would love to chat with anyone who knew my family.

A drive between 8:30-9:30 revealed that the storm was tough on the beach. I didn't have time to check the ocean side carefully but you could see that a number of the storm fences are down. The 3rd xover has been scoured out right up to the posts to which the chain is attached - and at one point a bit beyond with a gully actually cutting into the xover itself. The bay side seems unaffected and for the most part the road itself shows no signs - except of some debris that washed over in potentially vulnerable places. I suspect that the east shore of the Gurnet shoreline took a real beating - it's been losing a little, but noticeable, bit of ground every year. I hope to get out there this weekend to check things more completely.

12-27 storm had 60 mph winds, 25' waves on front beach, big dune erosion, a few wash-throughs

I have newspaper clippings pertaining to the secede of the Gurnet from Plymouth to Duxbury back in the 70's.
Agree we have little to no protection on the Gurnet and Saquish from fire, vandilism, snow removal, disturbance of the peace, violence and threats. We need more protection than Plymouth can or wants to give us. Our taxes are out of control and we get nothing for it.

Is there interest in forming a new town: i.e., secede from Plymouth?
To answer this question. back around the early 70's there was a letter drafted up to just do that. For some reason it never came about. I believe it went up to the Massachusetts legislature. The same concerns were brought up, taxes, police protection, fire etc. At that time, if I recall, Plymouth stated that they would not send any police except of rape or murder. Also at that time the GIA (Gurnet Improvement Association) aquired an old fire truck, stripped down, from what I believe was from Plymouth used in the forested areas around Plymouth. Morris Upham, retired Fire Chief, helped in aquiring to outfit the fire truck.I just may have some of that info in my archives from the 60's or 70's. I will look.

"Great job! I always thought publishing THE BEACON was not only a waste of resources but also environmentally unfriendly. Getting information via the internet makes much more sence on many levels. Keep up the good work and I look forward to passing along your site to others."

I'm unhappy with the property taxes given the complete lack of fire or police assistance. What exactly are we paying for as a group?

Very nice web site! The softball games between the Gurnet and Saquish teams were Major League. Many great memories of summers spent at the Gurnet.
